DIY: Mason Jar Herb Garden

For obvious reasons, I don’t like to throw things away so I tend to accumulate items, such as Mason jars and yogurt containers, to be used at a later date. Well, folks, that later date has arrived: a fun do-it-yourself project to turn old jars (or cans) into a beautiful herb garden.

What you’ll need:

  1. Mason jars or jam jars
  2. Herbs ( I got mine at Home Depot)
  3. Stones or small rocks
  4. Potting Soil

How to:

Place stones in the bottom of the jar (this is your sophisticated drainage system). Add potting soil then plant the herb seedlings or seeds in the potting soil.

Water as often as needed to keep the soil moist and watch your beautiful garden grow!

We experimented with this activity at a Drop-In center downtown and it was an absolute hit! Everyone enjoyed getting their hands dirty and taking home fresh herbs or aloe plants at the end of the day.

P.S. If you want to use a can, you will need to hammer holes into the bottom and put a plate underneath to catch the water.

We planted lavender seeds in a large coffee can. I am interested to see the progress!
